How It Is Made: The Craft of Simplicity
A dhoti is typically made from pure cotton, and in some cases, handloom silk or linen. Here’s how it comes to life:
Weaving: Traditionally, dhotis are handwoven on wooden looms, especially in states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Odisha.
Material: Cotton is the most common, due to its breathability and comfort. Premium versions may use silk, like the Pattu Veshti in South India.
Length & Size: Usually around 4 to 5 meters in length, the dhoti is unstitched and folded around the waist and legs.
Borders (Zari or Plain): Many dhotis have decorative borders made with zari (gold or silver threads) or colored yarns, often indicating cultural or regional identity.
